My Background: I believe my case is strong, but according to the traditional three metrics, it seems weak — only a handful of papers, 20 peer reviews, and 60 citations.

After reviewing some cases and working through mine, I’ve gathered a few insights. The very first step to any process is recognizing whether or not you are suited for a DIY approach.

self-evaluation

When it comes to self-evaluation, it inevitably revolves around three key metrics: papers, citations, and peer reviews, as well as whether you should hire a lawyer. In my view, law firms are profit-driven organizations that focus on maximizing efficiency. They rely heavily on their past experience and templates, and the three metrics are the easiest and most quantifiable aspects to streamline their processes.

However, the traditional three metrics are sufficient conditions, not necessary ones — not even close. Sufficiency means that if your three metrics are strong, your chances of approval are high. If you have a large number of citations and want a hassle-free process, hiring a law firm might be the way to go since their streamlined approach is highly refined.

But if your case doesn’t quite fit the assembly line model, yet you still feel extraordinary, it’s time to rethink your evaluation approach. Convince yourself first, and then you’ll be better positioned to convince others.

It’s essential to recognize that all successful cases are strong cases — the difference lies in where that strength comes from. The essence of self-evaluation is understanding where your strengths truly lie.

Tip

Find a neutral party, ideally someone who has successfully navigated the DIY route, to help you assess yourself properly. Look at your work, research, strengths, industry impact, and extraordinary abilities from an unbiased perspective.

Most importantly, adopt a confident mindset. Convincing yourself is the necessary condition for convincing the immigration officer!

Once you’re confident, we can move on to discussing how to persuade others and organize your materials.
